4x games always call every major faction “empire” regardless of its system, and it was right from the very start of the genre with original Civilization game. Idk if that’s purposeful liberalism but i doubt that, it was coined by Sid Meier and he surely didn’t read Lenin. The classical nonmarxist definition of “empire” do fit huge majority of them.
Depend, if let’s say tomorrow someone discover how to break the lightspeed barrier (extremely unlikely but not impossible), imperialists will pump money in that.
If that someone did discover it, odds are that someone would be in China, rather than trying to work through the choked mass of deliberate sabotage that is required for scientific advancement in the imperial core.
Yup, China is pushing more research then west in the space and theoretical physics now. West currently is still ahead because they have infrastructure and tons of accumulated experience but they will be left behind in the future.
Frankly I take issue with calling it an empire

I meant in terms of an “empire” reaching advanced, space faring stage. Looking around, I doubt it is possible
