    The U.S. government was largely responsible for provoking the invasion of Kuwait in the first place, and the Iraqi ruling class opted to invade Kuwait as compensation for the losses incurred from the Iran–Iraq war (which the U.S. ruling class also encouraged). The invasion of Iraq wasn’t so much about ‘taking over’ the country as it was disempowering it.

    As for the clueless ‘another foreign power was the aggressor and the USA was intervening to stop some act of conquest or intended conquest by a brutal and enslaving power’ factoid, read William Blum’s Killing Hope for a refutation. I know that that’s a pretty short comeback to that assertion, but if I tried to adequately explain just how wrong it was, I’d be writing all fucking day, and there are other things that I’d rather be doing with my time.
