Analysts say Jorgensen’s statements will help “clear the way forward” for European buyers who have been hesitant to sign deals with U.S. suppliers after 2030.
“For U.S. developers trying to get deals done, it’s a really positive signal,” said Fauzeya Rahman, an LNG analyst at consulting firm ICIS.
So much for independence. Europe gave up cheap, convenient, trouble-free pipeline gas, the supply of which was diversified through a bunch of streams, to sit on American ships with LNG under the stories about energy independence.
LNG exports from the US to the EU more than doubled last year, rising to 56 billion cubic meters in 2022 from 22 billion cubic meters the year before.
Cheniere Energy, the largest U.S. LNG exporter, this year agreed two contracts with Europe’s Equinor and BASF, promising to deliver 2.55 million tons of LNG a year across the Atlantic through the 2040s.
Venture Global LNG, another U.S. exporter, signed a 20-year contract in June to supply 2.25 million tons of the fuel a year to German state-owned SEFE, a company dedicated to powering Europe. The 20-year contract with EnBW, signed in October, is expected to make Venture Global the largest LNG supplier in Germany.
