IMO if it’s not libre I prefer to keep using DDG, StartPage or whatever, since at least their products are more or less finished, otherwise the only projects that are worthwhile (besides SearX but it doesn’t work that well) that I know of are YaCy and Infinity Search, I would support one of those two.
Try MetaGer. For SearX try to configure the engines and enable the option to proxy images (that will make image search work in nearly every case).
