NATO does not, and never did, ‘defend’ democracy - Yves Engler

A secretive alliance Canadians never voted to join that requires this country to defend faraway lands and funnel ever greater resources to warfare is presented as a tool of democracy. And pro-NATO propagandists ignore how the alliance once helped oust a Canadian government and its ties to undemocratic regimes. As a result of a decision

at the risk of being entirely genuine, NATO is a net positive for the world, especially for its member countries. We’re watching what happens when you let Russia talk you into disarming on the hopes of a forever peace play out with Ukraine right now. They want their Balkan border against the EU back by force, and would never dare step toe into a NATO country. Russia is time and time again the aggressor in Europe, and joining NATO is the only protection for many countries against that.

It was the US who disarmed Ukraine:

    • https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/defense-national-security/in-1994-the-us-succeeded-in-convincing-ukraine-to-give-up-its-nukes-but-failed-to-secure-its-future
    • https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-01-11-mn-10675-story.html

There was further disarmament as a condition to loans like these: https://www.imf.org/external/np/fin/tad/extcredt1.aspx?memberKey1=993&date1key=2004-12-31&dateyear=1995-12-31&roption=M

And as a condition to further loans under the Extended Funds Facility, as mentioned, here: https://www.rferl.org/a/1085840.html

The connection may not be neatly wrapped up like a Christmas present. But Ukraine’s weaknesses are a direct effect of US intervention. Before the yanks got involved, Ukraine was a powerhouse.

Putin wanted to join NATO: https://www.rferl.org/a/russia-putin-says-discussed-joining-nato-with-clinton/28526757.html

As had Yeltsin in 1993: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/12/russias-belief-in-nato-betrayal-and-why-it-matters-today

As did the Soviets before him, in 1954: https://www.counterpunch.org/2014/05/19/why-nato-has-not-permitted-russia-to-join/ :

Refusal of membership to Russia is simply another way of saying that NATO is not a means to ensure peace in Europe.

NATO killed six million people, including one million Iraqis, in it’s ‘war on terror’.

It was Soviet Russia, working with Soviet Ukranians, who saved Europe against the aggressive Nazis in WWII. It was NATO who bombed would-be-allies of Russia and Ukraine, later, in Kosovo. If you didn’t know, that’s in Europe.

You may be speaking from a genuine place but you are missing several key facts. These facts are a matter of public record. You can find them if you look. But you are unlikely to find them if you let NATO mouth pieces determine your thoughts.
