Yeah, probably donations, the Lemmy project gets funding from some EU thingamabob who finances development and hosting fees. Lemmy will never reach Reddit’s userbase, though, since the way it works makes it impossible and undesirable. There should never be a massive instance, but rather a lot of medium instances.
