  • To me it reads like we just don’t understand it enough yet to describe it properly. We’re relentlessly told that states in the quantum world just don’t behave in a way that can be intuitively described, I don’t know near enough to dispute that, so I really don’t have much option but to accept it. Maybe you (me too) would just like things to be… neater(?)

  • Good noise-cancelling headphones were a game-changer for me. I have sensory issues. I just can’t tune out certain noises. Dogs barking, smoke alarms chirping, fluorescent tubes buzzing, other people’s TVs or stereos.

I wear noise-cancelling headphones much of the time when I’m at home. Most of the time I don’t have anything playing, I’m just using the NC to block out the world.

Ok, so you’re at the supermarket and the cashier says “Hello, how are you today?”. Firstly, it’s taken most of my life to get over the fact that the only correct answer is “I’m fine.” Great, that’s progress. It used to be that I’d consider how I feel and give an honest answer (incorrect response). The little white lie when you’re not fine is difficult to get past, but I’m getting there.

Now, if you then follow up with “How are you?” I get the impression that they’d rather you not ask. FFS, I’d rather you not ask me either. I get that it would be incredibly tedious having everyone ask you how you’re going all day long… welcome to the club. What’s the deal??

  • I need to start again. It has been really helpful in the past. When it’s working, I noticed myself getting worked up about things and I found that I could pull myself back toward the centre. It takes work; you need to re-write your mind’s natural behaviour, which takes time. I could really use that discipline again lately. Thank you for reminding me.

I follow the typical “bring your focus back to your breath” method. However, after a while I added an additional layer… “try to feel your heartbeat under your breath”. It’s much harder to do and requires greater focus on the task. In a way, for me that makes it easier. Helpfully, the more stressed you are, the easier it is to find your heartbeat.

Whenever you find your thought drifting, just bring it back to your breath, and then to your heartbeat.

  • Same boat. I have been using WordPad and .rtf format for all my notes for maybe 15 years.

I’ve been meaning to jump to a markdown editor for a long time, and after this news I’ve already started using MarkText. I probably should have jumped ship a long time ago, but at least I’m on the path now.

I will have to figure out a neat way to convert my .rtf notes to .md. Update: I’ve found Pandoc, it’s a command line tool for which I’ve made a script for converting my .rtf files to .md.

  • Frustratingly, the rulings preventing them from bundling software with an operating system stopped them from building in anti-virus measures. For years when Windows was synonymous with malware, they had their hands tied. 20 years later, they started including Windows defender / Security Essentials. The unnecessary global economic losses caused were immense.

  • If you’ve spent some time with AI already you’ve probably realised that it takes some level of domain-specific information to get AI to produce a useful output. For example, people who are already artistic are better at getting artistically interesting images out of an AI. The idea and the guidance have value and are essential to the outcome. Prompt engineering is a very real skill.

Now this case is about an autonomous tool, which by definition doesn’t include a human’s guidance. I agree that the waters here are definitely murkier. If however, you put a blanket over all AI-assisted works and say that the author/engineer doesn’t deserve credit, or protection, then I think you’re off the mark.
