This is where I think it’s very important for everyone to have a well rounded education, and that goes not just for those who go into STEM, but also those who want to go into Humanities and Social Sciences. There’s no doubt that technology plays a HUGE role in our daily lives as well as society as a whole, and therefore, if you want to have a good understanding of Humanities/Social Sciences, it’s unavoidable that you’ll at least need to know some things about technology. Likewise, since technology plays such a big role in our daily lives, I think it’s extremely important for anyone studying STEM to also have an understanding of the ways that technology affects people’s lives as well as society as a whole (and that includes negative effects as well as positive ones. Too often, only the positives are discussed in STEM courses).

As someone who used to be much more optimistic about technology (and still am to some extent), I’d have to say, one of the things that turned me off to capitalism is when I started to realize how much technological progress is held back thanks to capitalism. It was also the realization that despite the promise of technology making our lives better, often times (thanks again to the capitalist system), technology ends up getting used in ways that make many people’s lives worse. For example, automation of tasks that used to require a human should be something that improves the lives of workers. Often what happens in reality though is that automation brings about layoffs, and then workers end up getting screwed. It’s totally the opposite of what you would expect to happen, and that’s largely due to the fact that under capitalism, the benefits of technology always go toward the wealthy.

I think there’s a lot of people who go into STEM fields who legitimately believe that they are doing a good thing for humanity. After all, many technologies do have great potential to do a lot of good. I think if more people in STEM had a better understanding of how capitalism allows the wealthy to appropriate all the benefits of technology at the expense of the poor, I’m sure you’d see a lot more opposition to capitalism from them.

  • Fair enough. Granted, given the nature of the CIA operating covertly and all that, it can be difficult to prove any connections beyond a shadow of doubt, but it’s definitely something I wouldn’t dismiss out of hand due to the many instances in which we do know about the CIA supporting pro-imperialist media sources, including many that pose as being on the “left”.

“Well ackchyually it was Ukrainian media that was falsely claiming they were doing so well, not us.”

Similar energy as NYT throwing Judith Miller under the bus and scapegoating her as the sole reason for NYT spreading Iraq war lies.

  • Out of all of Maupin’s views to contest, such as the absurd idea that waving an American flag will bring about socialism, why do you take issue with the idea that Vaush might be CIA backed? It’s not that ridiculous given CIA’s history as well as history of other US intelligence agencies (for example, the FBI seems to like supporting anarchism and Maoism), and Vaush supports US imperialism 100% of the time.
