  • That’s quite a background story - a lot of different viewpoints that you’re exposed to. I totally get not speaking to relatives, it’s sometimes very tough to bridge those gaps even when discussing the most banal things. I truly hope your dad does eat your shorts and wakes up to the fuckery that’s been going on for ages. Thanks for the story! Wtf is with the gfs brother and the bathroom thing?

“Dialectical and Historical Materialism” is an important one - it’s very short, but it’s a bit hairy if you’re not familiar with these materialist philosophies. You don’t need to go all Lenin hitting the books, but try to get a sense of the ideas first. Happy reading!

  • I’m from New York, but I’m living in the UK for now. For me growing up, everything was tied to school. The idea of bringing a kid from outside the school community to events like that comes off as creepy. I guess I can see parks and playground being cool, but there’s a lot more a kid can (and have to) learn on their own. We can’t be parents forever!

  • You and me both comrade! It’s a dense topic and I haven’t heard much about it. We’re trying to be a healthy feminist space for our girl, but definitely fall short in rejecting the capitalist marketplace. Child rearing is full of colourful plastic, and so many things make life easier for us and for her! We try for the environmentally friendly alternatives. At this point I dunno what else there is!

  • I think you’ve got a point with ‘Anarchist’ type schools. I do know Montessori schools, but I’m really hoping we can get a local Waldorf school for her. It’s a philosophy founded by Rudolf Steiner who was a Christian seer and philosopher - sounds a bit ‘uhh what’ but trust me, he was an incredible writer and orator. The schools allow kids to guide themselves by their interests and there’s loads of outdoor experience involved.

Engendering interest in these ‘alternative’ education methods would be pretty tough - I think the way to go is to just do it, and results will speak so much louder than any conversation.

Sorry for jumbling your comments - but regarding home schooling, I think parents have a legitimate apprehension towards the material in schools (or, in this era, the risk of a shooting etc) but the community and group of friends that can build around a child in school is (in my inexperienced opinion) fucking vital to human growth.

  • The consensus is that they don’t read any theory apart from kropotkins bread book. That makes me wonder how anarchists are placed within the class hierarchy. If they have no immediate concerns for their own struggle, enough of a concern to read legitimate strategy regarding their position, does this not mean that they’re outside the lens of struggle? Are they too well off to care, but at the same time envisioning a utopian equitable future for all? Myself, I’m a devious class traitor and will use all my resources to bring about communism. I dabbled with anarchy because at first it was appealing and sounded amazing (too good to be true?) - but then I got down to brass tacks about HOW we go about transitional governance, and how to take care of the impoverished and the workers while the transition takes place. Lenin and Mao grabbed me by the short and curlys and I’ve never looked back.
