According to a statement issued by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) , the number of displaced people in Haiti reached a record high of 1.4 million , representing a 36 percent increase since 2024 , consolidating it as the “highest statistic ever recorded in the country .” The United Nations (UN) agency emphasizes that more than half of these displaced people are children and women, the sectors most vulnerable to the crisis.
Grégoire Goodstein, IOM Chief of Mission in Haiti, underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that “the severity of this crisis demands a more intense and sustained response .” IOM urged the international community to reciprocate the “generosity of the Haitian communities” hosting the displaced with urgent and renewed international support .
The Caribbean nation, the poorest country in the Americas, has suffered for years from the incessant violence of criminal gangs, who carry out murders, rapes, kidnappings, and looting amid chronic political instability. The situation deteriorated dramatically since early 2024 , when gang activity forced the resignation of then-Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
Although armed groups control almost all of the capital, Port-au-Prince, the IOM warned that the crisis has spread beyond the city limits. Sixty-four percent of the new displacements occurred outside the capital, particularly affecting the departments of Central and Artibonite, where attacks by armed groups have multiplied in 2025.
The situation in the shelters for displaced persons is unsustainable, as they are overcrowded. The crisis is further aggravated by the continued deportation of Haitians from the neighboring Dominican Republic , with more than 207,000 expelled earlier this year, further straining the nation’s limited resources.
Haiti is currently governed by a transitional Presidential Council , as the country has not held elections since 2016. The security crisis and massive population displacement are the most urgent challenges for the new Council and for the overall humanitarian response.
It is my understanding that the US kidnapped the previous President and then instituted the Presidential Council and had Kenyan troops come in to occupy the nation. Forget the obvious reaction and immigration of Haitians to the US (which was part of the stupid presidential campaign of stupid in 2024). The question I have is: are these gangs really mindlessly violent gangs or an attempt to organize against foreign occupation? The US has long hated the country and done all it can to keep it destabilized and impoverished. The media has an interest in being a propaganda arm of the US.

The answer to your question is complicated. A great explanation that could contextualize this can be found in the following amazing article posted by Conselheiro regarding the gangs:
What I can confidently say is that Haiti is flooded with guns sent by the US(as was explained by the Chinese representative in the video within the UN discussion) and is already invaded by Erik Prince mercenary goons. Every single side(Police, gangs, gov’t, narcos, and foreign mercenaries) within the conflict of Haiti are too vastly armed by the US to stoke chaos in the country. The US and its arm corporations have a vested interest in perpetuating violence in Haiti because it is lucrative.
With this context exposed, there are strategies to help and some were also shared in Conselheiro’s article. Anyway, I recommend that article!
I think this encapsulates what I’ve come to understand. “In other words, peace threatens multiple revenue streams. From the perspective of the system’s guardians, peace is therefore both dangerous and costly.”
Thank you for the link! What a great read!
Glad that I was able to help! 🫡
Damn.
