Oh fuck, i completely forgot about betamax and HD-DVD. Back in Uni I wrote a 20 page paper about failed formats. I sent my first draft to my professor for feedback. He called me in and asked “Have you thought about porn?” I bet my facial expression must have been priceless.
That’s a myth. Betamax lost because it couldn’t record long enough. Movies had to be on two tapes. By the time they finally extended the time VHS was already dominant
Also licensing out the VHS format to 3rd party manufacturers also played a not insignificant role in beating Betamax. More conpanies making more VHS machines won a lot of the battle.
Now this is redditing. Nothing like posting a wrong answer to get the correct one. But also, some random youtuber? I’m going to need far more evidence before I throw away decades of wisdom
Somebody already pointed out technology connections is a good source and how rigorous his research is but I wanted to ask what your source was that you were referring to as decades of wisdom?
Did you mean you heard it decades ago and repeated since but it was just rumour or “common knowledge” of the time? I ask because I find your answer, and similar, frustrating. I would wager you didn’t watch the video at all since you dismissed it out of hand and are steadfastly sticking to your guns (though I could be wrong) but you don’t offer any reputable source as a counter, just that you heard it decades ago and probably repeated by many people who have no other knowledge than they heard somebody repeat the same incorrect factoid many times so it has become wisdom. Like daddy-long-legs being the most venomous spider in the world but can’t pierce human skin, or ostriches putting their heads in sand, etc etc - all made up/incorrect but repeated frequently enough and never fact checked so understood to be true or equates to decades of wisdom that people “cite”
You aren’t wrong with this theory. It’s why betamax and hd-dvd lost too

So it’s twice as difficult to hide your porn on betamax then VHS?
A common myth but untrue

Betamax may have been higher quality, but the fact is that consumer TVs of the time couldn’t display the difference in quality.
Classic Tropic Thunder scene.
I was one of the five people who owned the HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360 🫡
