The cat is out of the bag. Banning it will do nothing.

Highly doubt it. Regardless, banning will ensure that all these major corps won’t be able to provide closed models as a service. You’ll need to use open models and run it yourself.

People have discussed this to death already.

The problem with gen ai is that you give someone the ability to draw something perfectly but not the experience of learning that ability.

This leads to the skill and effort of artists being massively devalued (not monetary but culturally). Additionally it is completely impossible for our brains to distinguish between those fakes and real stuff in a tik tok video timeline. It draws tons of power which by current repenting on renewables is mostly coal, oil and gas powered.

Gen ai is nothing that should be used for profit or be freely available. I’m okay with people using it at home to experiment but thats it. And the use of ai generated content without markers should be prohibitet.

In a conversation that came up the other day, someone explained that the usage of AI is actually negligible, it’s the training that has the exorbitant energy costs.

That is completely incorrect. Although the training is insane, compared to the usage. It is still manyfold of google searches and such. That is pro ai propaganda imo.

I had to take a lot of time to switch from politics to technology to read the first one and I sadly dont have the time to invest for the second one.

Here, the opinion from someone who did AI stuff for a living, before it was cool:

They are saying a boobie picture is not using a lot of energy by itself. Which I think is valid. (Sidenote: Per my understanding of marxism, it isn’t healthy to police yourself anyway as long as you do your best to not harm others and spread the word. Ethical consumption and all.)

Here’s the opposite point btw: https://www.reddit.com/r/aipromptprogramming/comments/1212kmm/according_to_chatgpt_a_single_gpt_query_consumes/

My point is that, scaled up to most of the western world, using AI for shit you could use a search engine for, let alone a wiki, is like putting a gun to the head of the earth and pulling the trigger, especially in addition of the reduction in renewables effort and even if one was to errect another couple chernobyls and fukushimas.

Especially in a place like this, where the obvious profit extraction drive of capital is very well understood, it kind of baffles me to see a comment like this.

Generative AI is an apocalypse tool.

I don’t want it to be good. I do not want tools that will be weaponized against us to be good. At some point this shit will be used against us to fabricate evidence.

I’ve been seeing some AI anti-israel bordering on anti-semetic videos show up here and there. Like a Hasidic Jew pushing a brown kid off a bike and saying “god promised this to me.” The issue with that being of course the traditional Jewish religious culture is what the zionists hate more than anything.
