  • I think this is where there’s some disconnect. As a black man and a victim in this specific case, as well as a full-time carer and an advocate of disability awareness, I have incredibly strong feelings about the rhetoric the discourse about this has taken.

In my opinion, Saturday Night Live, albeit clumsily, made the pertinent point that, irrespective of any reason, we cannot and should not attempt to minimalise bad behaviour, with the excuse of disability and I agree with that point.

You only need to scroll up through this thread to see posts where it’s outright stated that neurodivergient people shouldn’t have to apologise when being abusive.

At no point have I said that I’m not sympathetic to people with Tourettes and that society as a whole doesn’t need to have a better understanding. I saw a clip with some people saying, “you can’t say racist things unless you’re racist” and that’s just ignorant. But just because there’s multiple victims, that being the perpetrator and the larger, black people group, those in attendance, those that were watching the footage and those that were reminded that their well-being is always an acceptable cost, doesn’t mean they’re not all victims.

If I accidentally kick my cat because she’s at the foot of my bed and I didn’t see her, I still say I’m sorry. It’s not about intention, it’s about outcome. I strive for a world where we don’t make exceptions for abuse of any kind and we make concerted efforts to understand better. There’s no hierarchy of victim-hood.

  • Again, under no circumstances is racism okay ever. No one should ever have to endure abuse just because their skin colour is a darker shade than yours. That you believe neuro divergence somehow makes you immune to the fact that people can be hurt is wild. But then again, we live in the very same world where the BBC didn’t even think to censor the anti-black racism, because it’s socially acceptable.
