Every so often I see it brought up as being so edgy and funny, but it’s really not. There are a few moments that are funny, but they’re packed between racism, ableism, and really any kind of -ism you can imagine. It gets defended as “just a shitpost” from the same crowd that talks about the glory days of people not being so easily offended. I rewatched a compilation before posting this just to be sure of my critique and it’s exactly as I remembered lol. Nothing but attack helicopter tier jokes. Some people say if you didn’t watch it in the 2000s you won’t get it, but I’ve seen shows from the 2000s that are actually good and funny shrug-outta-hecks

Anyway, I’m convinced most people who talk about how funny it is haven’t seen anything beyond clips. It’s just lazy and boring

The funniest thing about the dubbed Ghost Stories is that it’s official. If it was a fan dub on youtube in the style of YGOTAS it would be pretty unremarkable, but they put that shit on TV.

If you’ve seen Scary Movie, it’s the same sort of humor from that era. It isn’t just shows from the 2000s, it’s being a Millennial child in the 2000s that made it palatable.

Rewatching it now is really ugly. Kind of like that Marge Simpson story where her story is really gross, bizarre, and bigoted - a reference to the caricature of Apu - where you’d just find it severely distasteful.

I am an elder millennial and I fucking hated Scary Movie even when it first came out. One of the only times I walked out of a theater mid-showing. I-was-saying

Yeah I watched it for fun recently and it’s mostly just reactionary shock humour, I only got through the first couple episodes when the novelty wore off

I’ve only seen clips. I have a feeling the montage was good enough for me. It had the initial surprise and shock and I’m sure would wear off quickly.

It was edgy and funny when I didn’t know what humor was but these days it’s only good for the couple of clips and one liners that everyone always passes around as “wow so funny show”

yeah i rewatched it a few months ago because i remember some of it being funny but i think there’s maybe five jokes that aren’t just bigoted. can’t imagine watching the full show, the clips i’ve seen on youtube are more than enough

I watched the whole thing and found a lot of it really funny. The ableism and racism is definitely way too common in it though. Weirdly though instead of homophobia it uses the example of lesbians in conversion therapy to dunk on evangelicals for being ghoulish, so that’s odd given the rest of the tone of the show.

I think it’s enjoyable from a “people obviously having fun making random jokes” perspective but the problem is that the people making those jokes are white Americans in the early or mid 2000s so

I’ve seen like four episodes of the Ghost Stories dub and honestly yeah. I did make a note that I wanted to continue Ghost Stories “eventually”, for some unknown reason, but it did stand out to me that the Ghost Stories dub is considerably less funny or interesting outside of the handful of most shared clips.

While on the subject of anime that are better enjoyed as clips, I think I also gave this label to Nichijou and Wataten: the former basically because it’s already structured as a series of largely disconnected vignettes, so it might’ve been even more GOATed if the pacing was left up to the viewer; the latter because if your only knowledge of Wataten comes from clips, you get to live blissfully unaware of the fact that the main character is a pedophile.
