So I’m looking at the polling data and the most recent polling data has Luis Arce (from Morales’ MAS) at 41.9%, Carlos Mesa (FRI) at 26.8% and Jeanine Áñez (current fascist president) at 13.3%.
I am not very informed on Bolivian politics so I was wondering if anybody could explain the situation a bit more and answer some of my questions.
-
Are these numbers good or bad?
-
On Wikipedia, it says FRI used to be Marxist-Leninist in the past and are now “social democrats”… what the hell happened there? And how did they react to Morales being ousted? Do they support the current fascist government/did they help install it?
Second-round polling has me a bit worried: Arce VS Áñez is at 43.2% - 42.6%. Arce VS Mesa is at 42.9% - 41%. Áñez VS Mesa is at 32.6% - 31.6% with a whopping 29.6% saying they wouldn’t vote (leads me to believe FRI supported the coup).

Why do so many FRI (apparently a social democratic party lol) voters switch over to an actual fascist over MAS – what the hell is that about? Isn’t that like an Elizabeth Warren voter voting for Donald Trump or some shit? Like, I get they suck - but to actually vote for a fascist… jfc

Like… what are the chances the fascists and America allow MAS to win? I just can’t see a scenario where this goes well after the coup. I feel like the world isn’t paying that much attention to a country like Bolivia and there is no way in hell they let MAS win.
Another one… what happens if MAS somehow win. Does Morales have a political future? Should MAS… wow it feels weird being allowed to say this, any chance MAS puts the fascist on trial for treason and do some hangings?
I know Morales isn’t a very violent person, but I feel if there’s ever a reason to hang someone, it’s this. Or would the political backlash be too big for them and the fascist will basically go scotfree as nothing happened – funny considering they’ve been executing people left and right.
Also, from my understanding - the Army supported the coup, how can that be resolved?
In my opinion, there’s no way, if MAS wins, that Anez will recognize the results. They’ve already tried to criminalize the movement for socialism in Bolivia and she’s ruling with military might. Hopefully the MAS candidate wins, but I’m pessimistic about the whole thing.
