What I’ve used so far:
- Ubuntu
- KDE neon
- Linux Mint
- Debian
I don’t really like the MacOS feel, so things like ElementaryOS are not an option. I’m eyeing Pop!_OS though, but maybe there are less known distros that are worth a try. Suggestions?
Devuan 3 + Cinnamon + OpenRC
Manjaro KDE, ofc not Ubuntu/Debian based, but why not try something new?
I only own one device, and its the device I also do work on. I’ve been using Debian based distros for 4 years now, and it just works for me. I don’t feel like I’m in a position to change my workflow. Now I think about it, would my workflow change that much? Other than .deb files not working, and using something other than apt, what else is different?
Not much really. It comes with a graphical repository manager that works similar to apt based tools.
Ohh okay, might give an Arch based distro a try then. Not Manjaro though, I don’t like the project leaders after the whole treasurer fiasco.
You will probably have a bad time with anything other than Manjaro coming from Ubuntu, especially normal Arch.
I would say give Manjaro a try first and only of you like arch based stuff switch to something else later.
And IMHO the treasurer story was a storm in the waterglass issue that really was much less problematic than some people claim.
Try Manjaro Gnome with Gnome Tweaks
That treasurer story was also just one of several shitty stories, though. Other dumb things they’ve done in the past years:
- Let their certificates expire twice and told their users to “fix” it by setting back their system clocks.
- Ship the proprietary FreeOffice by default (before backlash made them introduce a selection dialog in the installer).
- Recently, the Manjaro Cinnamon Community Edition decided to ship the proprietary Vivaldi Browser by default. That is not a decision made by the official Manjaro distribution, but I still feel like that represents the general direction you should expect. And personally, I would want my distribution to at least reserve the right to audit the web browser that they recommend to me.
If it “just works” for you, why do you want to try a new one?
Maybe Debian Sid. All of the good of Ubuntu with none of the bloat.
I found it very stable actually. Every now and then you are trying an upgrade at the wrong time when some dependency hasn’t caught up, buy all you have to do is try again a few days later…
Never had it really break on me
Pop OS, ZorinOS, Ubuntu Gnome, with Gnome Tweaks (and extensions) installed
Regolith https://regolith-linux.org/ Ubuntu with i3 customized
Regolith DE recently got ported to Arch, too. I saw a post on Reddit about it.
Definitely try Pop!_OS! It has a very usable and fast desktop environment and comes with a well maintained software manager.
I’ve been using it for more than a month after I made that post. Its great, I like it a lot. The software manager is usable, but still the worst part of the system, like all the Linux distros I’ve used.
