“Male power fantasy” seems somewhat reductive for Clark tbh. Good Superman works focus on who he is as a person and his human connections rather than hitting dudes. Not to mention the importance of things like Siegel and Schuster being jewish to his origins. And the immigration parallels.

He’s been written as an obtuse male power fantasy before but thats not really the core of the charachter.

I dont have good analysis of Goku tho

Not gonna get into goku too much, but generally I think it can be summed up with “he has too much personality to be a mary sue”. Goku is goku, even hearing his creator made him as a parallel to Superman is crazy because he doesn’t act like Superman. He’s goku.

I don’t think the Superman stuff was originally there, since Goku started out as a version of the Monkey King from Journey to the West. But in the Saiyan Saga, when Goku’s backstory gets revealed by Raditz, there’s definitely a lot of parallels to Superman - the biggest difference is that the Saiyans are fully evil wheras the Kryptonians were just kind of arrogant.

Adult [or even teenage] Goku is way closer to Superman than Sun Wukong, though I don’t think he’s especially close to either.

does mary sue just mean strong now? i thought it meant a (usually) flawless self-insert character? like the term is (derogatory) for tween girl fanfiction.

superman is usually not a self-insert and while usually extremely boring because he’s too stronk, he’s not flawless as a person.

    goku is a terrible father

People have decided it means strong when its rhetorically useful i guess. Though the idea that this applies to Superman and not Goku is self evidentally silly.

The idea that Superman is boring because he’s strong is making the mistake that superhero stories are about the fights only. The best Superman stories are about his humanity and relationships. He is a pretty complex charachter on that level.

Also “Goku is a terrible father” is more a Team 4Star meme then it is actually true lol.

i mean the good superman stories are like “for the man who has everything” but there are a fuckload of superman writers who are not alan moore and just give every 2-bit thug in an alley a kryptonite gun

other characters can have stories about the fight and have stakes or precarity but superman isn’t credible in that mode. they need to stop adapting the fucken doomsday story.
