Well since the sub didn’t allow free speech and banned everyone who disagrees, as a free speech absolutist, I am happy it got taken down.

I actually agree with you in this isolated scenario. The hivemind in that sub is rather insane lol. You won’t get banned for disagreeing, but you will certainly get downvoted to hell. I’m speak from experience here
My issue lies more with the fact that the level of “punishment” for restricting free speech is not equal
Subreddit A says x, and bans people who disagree
Subreddit B says y, and bans people who disagree
For some reason, A recieved a harsher punishment than B. The reason for this certainly isn’t because “Free speech happened”. It was a sarcastic remark

No further arguments from my side, I think you are completely right and I agree with you.
I am a liberal myself and I have no doubt a lot of liberal subreddits do the same to people who disagree, I find it equally cowardice.

Well there’s a lot of currently existing restrictions on what you can and can’t publish in media in China. The ministry of culture has restrictions on things that “disrupt the social order” and “threatening national unity”. People who are openly critical of government policies have had fines placed on them and sometimes jail times too.

Okay. What kind of sources do you have on that? Where did you learn that? What insights do you have into those cases? I know plenty of people in China who can protest and critique the government.
u/paco926 - originally fromr/GenZhou
I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t have any sources specifically out of China. Most of my information comes from groups like Amnesty International. I tend to trust what they say since they’re all over the world, generally unbiased, and report accurately on the abuses going on in the US, Latin America, Israel, etc.
If you have anything that says otherwise please share.

What restrictions does China have on free speech
u/paco926 - originally from r/GenZhou
Aren’t you like not allowed to challenge the government openly? This isn’t a secret or anything.
u/california_sugar - originally from r/GenZhou
What are you talking about

Are they not able to emigrate? It is not illegal to leave China and move elsewhere.

You literally can’t do that plus what do I have to find on of the 5% of people who don’t approve of their government and also want to emigrate
u/4evaronin - originally from r/GenZhou
Oh, don’t worry. Uncle Gordan Chang here can introduce you to “some of the Chinese people [he knows].”
