I have an external USB HDD that I use currently. The problem is that if I start my torrent client and a bunch of torrents are being seeded, the HDD gets really hot.

What would be a good storage medium for this use case? The machine only has a microSD card slot and USB3 ports.

Ideally, something that works better for random access, so flash storage basically. microSD would work, but it isn’t very reliable. I’d say an external SSD would be your best bet. You can use a SATA to USB 3 adapter to connect an internal SSD, which should be cheaper than buying an external one.

Brands aren’t really a good way to determine the quality of an SSD. Sandisk is known to have issues with their SSDs. Other than that, I’d look up the specific SSD model you want to buy and see if there are any significant issues. I personally have SSDs from Kingston, Crucial, Sabrent, Inland (Microcenter store brand), Western Digital, and Silicon Power.
