Hoo boy that PGMOL audio is very revealing about how bad the process is. And yeah that is actually such incompetence.
Firstly: VAR should really be ignoring the rule about pulling the game back after play restarts especially when they literally said some boss guy at PGMOL said delay. Common sense needs to be applied, not just strict adherence to the rules as written.
Secondly, and more importantly, the decision should be said independent of what the on field decision is. That would’ve stopped this mistake. Instead of check complete, say “goal” or “no goal”.
And lastly, there needs to be a proper protocol for what you do what you fuck up like this. Pulling it back, yes, but also some rules — how long before? What if there’s been a goal before you could pull it back? Cuz if spurs somehow scored a goal off that free kick before it got called back, which seems plausible given the confusion in the VAR room, how do you manage that?

I was truly shocked listening to it. Nothing that was said was clear, they were given the opportunity to rectify yet they chose to let play carry on. The operator literally told them two or three times, the call was offside are you happy with that decision. Fucking donkeys were caught napping on the job. What do you mean you can’t do anything? You’re given the go ahead to delay, call down to the pitch to delay. Stephen Warnock made a good point, if you’ve caught it…stop the match, notify both sets of managers and captains that this is what happened and they’ll correct it, send a message out on social media and the stadium screens to explain it to everyone else. It’s just common sense, it’s not difficult.
VAR really should be a separate set of individuals not part of PGMOL, because if that’s what’s been happening… They’re 100% just having mistakes slide like this.
