I’d love to learn more about the history of chess in the USSR from their perspective.

    I don’t think there’s much if there’s anything at all, I am not an expert in Soviet cinema, but I have seen some stuff and I’d say documentary film is one genre where they didn’t have much at all.

    Also, considering how the Russians already had a lot of grand masters before the formation of the USSR maybe it wasn’t something so deserving to be filmed, whereas in the contrary, there are various films about Bobby Fischer (of course propaganda is to blame here, too) since the US wasn’t exactly a place where chess mattered at all and he managed to beat a country that had been winning for the last 20 years (and managed to keep doing so after Fischer until 1999, after the dissolution of the USSR).

    I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, but even if it does, I think you’d have a really hard time getting a copy and subtitles.
