Memes like this are funny but real talk how do we make gaming less reactionary. I wish there were more games with Communist themes.

gaming being reactionary has a lot to do with the history of gaming, and the general vibe hardcore gamers still try to push in gaming communities.

10 years ago (2009) if you were a gamer you were

      • nerdy
      • toxically male
      • probably a reject
      • most likely took to gatekeeping on your favourite games

20 years ago (1999) if you were a gamer you were

      • very nerdy
      • very likely toxically male
      • very likely outcasted
      • most definitely gatekeeped your favourite games, but also went further to gatekeep all games from people you didn’t like

      5 years ago (2014)

      • nerdy
      • either gender, but males were still very toxic
      • a little too into racist memes (like shoop-da-woop and watermelon man, i’m not proud of past me’s)
      • very likely an outcast, but it feels worse because everyone’s talking about the newest games
      • gatekeep because “casuals” are ruining your games… even though those “casuals” are the only reason multiplayer games exist the way they do

So now (2019) if you’re one of those gamers who isn’t letting go of old attitudes you’re probably

      • “well acktually” nerdy
      • an incel who refuses to accept that girls can be gamers too, doesn’t recognize transfolk in the community, and demands that games cater to toxic masculinity
      • your only friends are fellow toxic gamers, so you get echo chambered with your own incel bullshit
      • gatekeep to such an extreme you’re going to get banned from most communities, esp. communities popular with the modern rainbow.
      • very likely to get indoctrinated into fascist bullshit, because if you can gatekeep with games you can do that with politics.

So, if we want to make gaming less reactionary, we need to either force those shits to realize why they’re wrong, or we need to displace them so badly on their own forums and subs, that they are forced to condense themselves down into obscurity. Neither of which are super possible, unfortunately.

Same. There are a few cool leftist game dev shops, and I wish gaming culture overall wasn’t so awful.

I can’t really speak to it much, I’m still playing through a shitload of emulated SNES and N64 games before I get back up to speed on stuff out now.
