Whenever a chud says "Oh you're a communist? Read a book, moron!" I've started asking "Which do you recommend?" but I've never gotten a reply 😕🤔

a lib who got lost and wandered into hexbear once did the “read a book” thing about China, so I asked them what book they recommended and they recommended a completely unrelated novel and asserted they just meant read any book, not a non-fiction book about China

I wish I could remember what book it was, I think it was one of the english literature “classics”, the kind of thing you recommend without reading when you’re desperate to sound smart and well read

It felt like a protestant church with arbitrary numbers instead of arbitrary bible verses. I’m not at all joking when I say that four months of my life was dedicated to an apple economy that I would have thought was stupid as a child. The COVID supply shocks were happening, the most fascinating event in political economy I’ve seen in my lifetime, and there wasn’t a single word about it from the preacher. We just learned more neat little apple facts that didn’t line up with the things his students were experiencing and more justifications for why the apple facts are as real as physics. I had to get stoned before it just to not care about being insulted.

I taught a Calculus for Business course once. The amount of times I had to remind business students of this very simple, nearly self-evident formula was pretty shocking. I would have thought that a sophomore in an undergrad business program would have no problem remembering that profit = revenue - cost, but no, apparently that was a tricky one that needed quite a few reminders.

The system justifies itself: they train and pay thousands of economists to believe their own hype, and make it so that those economists are the only “authoritative” sources, and all the voices of sanity are drowned out.

Still, you would think at least one communist somewhere would have written a debunking of modern vulgar economics by now, especially given the fact that with how obviously nonsensical neoclassic economics is, it’s probably the weakest pillar of the modern liberal ideology and the easiest to attack for Marxists.

And kind of this one: guide to marxist economics introduction episode in which thefinnishbolshevik briefly talk about what Marx called vulgar economics.

And that’s about it for criticism from a Marxist perspective I think.

Chat is a text only community for casual conversation, please keep shitposting to the absolute minimum. This is intended to be a separate space from c/chapotraphouse or the daily megathread. Chat does this by being a long-form community where topics will remain from day to day unlike the megathread, and it is distinct from c/chapotraphouse in that we ask you to engage in this community in a genuine way. Please keep shitposting, bits, and irony to a minimum.

As with all communities posts need to abide by the code of conduct, additionally moderators will remove any posts or comments deemed to be inappropriate.

Thank you and happy chatting!
