I hate how techbro the Linux and most of FOSS communities are. It’s literally software communism and you get these incel-type libertarians everywhere who refuse to include anything deemed too “progressive” or “SJW” into their precious projects.

Even fedi software like Mastodon suffers from it.

I don’t know if I would classify these guys as techbros. Techbros are the ones who jump from VC-funded startup to startup, jerk off to blogposts by Cal Newport, and overuse the word “disrupt”

They kinda use that mindset but twist it to become the dreaded “fossbro”, just reactionaries with the veneer of being better than the Silicon Valley-type bros. Even the instance I’m on has fosstodon.org blocked I’m pretty sure lmao

I thought Mastodon was decent about it? They have some sort of policy against hate mongering instances. That’s why there is a fash fork of it.

Or maybe you mean the tech oriented users on some Mastodon instances are reactionary?

I’m not super into Fediverse discourse as I just stick to posting communist stuff, but there’s been a lot of talk of how Eugen refuses to implement further moderation tools that people have been wanting (especially PoC & minorities) to cut back on harm. For instance, giving servers the ability to basically defederate with everyone as a default and only allow specific instances to create spaces people would want, the ability to post only to a local timeline instead of either public, to followers, or DMs.

It’s all based on that idea that because it’s a public social media network, it “ruins” the experience if people can make little bubbles. The logic isn’t sound as you can already do that but it’s just a hassle instead of just simply allowing it as options and making it safer for people as a default.

There’s also no mindset of specifically trying to block fascists and the right from using the platform from the start, unlike Lemmy (thanks having commie devs). So when Gab became a thing, Eugen blocked them from federating, but there was no further push to make it difficult for fascists to easily use the software or allow instances like that to propogate. So hateful instances do exist but it’s up to individual instances to block them, basically enabling hate and right-wing talking points.
