Trump doesn’t want to end the war in Ukraine so much that he’s trying, and it’s so obvious everyone can see it, to ally with Russia against China. But Putin isn’t dumb enough to fall for that, Trump is inherently an imperialist and so won’t agree to a circumstances which will hurt the American Empire. Therefore, it’s likely that all of the negotiations are going to flounder out.
I believe that Trump does want to pull the US out of the whole Ukraine debacle but he is too ignorant of the reality of the conflict to be able to do so anywhere near as fast as he would like. If he really understood the causes of the conflict and how it is really going for Russia instead of believing the nonsense casualty numbers that the Ukrainians are feeding the US, then he would understand that a) asking Russia to just stop the war without resolving the root causes of the conflict is pointless, and b) unlike him Russia is under no time pressure to end it right away, in fact the longer this goes on the better their negotiating position gets.
Trump’s mistake was that he has such an inflated ego he really thought he could negotiate a quick end to the conflict by just using some carrots and some sticks. He wanted to be seen as this great deal-maker but now he’s basically stuck holding the bag, he’s invested himself too much politically in the idea of negotiating a quick peace when really the simplest and safest way politically for him to end it was to distance himself from the entire affair and blame it all on the Democrats. Just cut all aid to Ukraine and everything resolves itself in a few months.
That would have been the smart move, and it would even have gotten him much better relations with Russia afterwards. Now he may well find himself being dragged into continuing to prop up Ukraine because he won’t want to be seen as having failed. Which is a good thing for China because that means the Ukraine conflict keeps draining much of the attention and resources that the US would otherwise be deploying against China. And now he’s gotten himself into potentially yet another quagmire with Yemen, so the imperialist war against China is going to continue being further and further delayed, which only works to China’s advantage.
This is the problem when you are such a crude imperialist who a) has a massive ego and b) sees everything in terms of brute force. The Trump camp thought they were going to pull back from the overextension, consolidate the empire, streamline it and finally shift focus to China, but Trump is already fucking that up. Panama, Greenland, Canada, none of these distractions really benefit them. They would have been better off not opening up all of these additional fronts and instead focusing all on China. We are fortunate our enemies are so stupid and incompetent.

Exactly. This isn’t the same US as that hyper competent Empire of the First Cold War. The US is ruthless, sure, but lacks discipline.
