excellent comment, honestly couldn’t have said it better myself. all gay communists (ML or not) are likely painfully aware of the history of violent homophobia so it’s not that we’re justifying the homophobic policies of the USSR- which should be rightfully criticised, obviously- but rather acknowledging that 1) this was the norm around the globe and especially in eastern europe and, 2) using this as a gotcha against either gay/lgbt communists or as a means of “proving” that MLs are socially conservative is incredibly stupid.
being a communist isn’t about justifying and excusing every single thing the USSR/(insert other socialist state) has done. i don’t think anyone with the ability to critically think believes that. it’s about learning from past mistakes, and this was a big one.
