    Now I’m no big city macroeconomist, but I see Chinese foreign investment as having been the starter motor for an industrial engine that, once started, no longer has a need for it.

      I see it the same way, China is huge and that means its internal domestic economy is comparable to the west. Even without any FDI, China is still very formidable. As the article points out, not relying on FDI allows China to pursue a more independent policy as well.
