The new Code would legalize same-sex marriage, allow same-sex couples to adopt children, promote equal sharing of domestic responsibilities and extend labor rights (including pay) for those who care full-time for children, the elderly and people with disabilities. It would further confirm the right to free abortion, paid family leave and assisted and surrogate pregnancies (but not for profit), and it would fight gender-based violence and expand the rights of children and grandparents.

This is really, really exciting. Also nerve-wracking as hell. The first ML country to do this will be forever remembered as the trendsetter for firm adherence to truly scientific socialist principles regarding LGBT+ rights. On the international stage, this may further pave the way for their comrades in China/Vietnam/DPRK/Laos to continue their march forward and help many understand that “LGBT rights” are not a western-imperialist psyop, or that they don’t have to be. I’m very nervous because of religious and particularly Catholic influence that has held a grip on restraining this movement for a long while, but I have faith in the Cuban people and the communist party ✊️

The other issues outlined are also of vast importance. Women are the revolution and revolution is a nation’s women, the elderly and disabled deserve immense respect and care… a wonderful, shattering revolt against neoliberal anti-people hegemony is underway and I’m immensely proud of the Cuban masses for being at the forefront of it.
