Intelligent speed assistance, or ISA, is a new anti-speeding technology that will be used on every vehicle sold in the European Union. The EU regulation (part of the larger General Vehicle Safety Regulation) takes effect today, and it states that all new models and types of vehicles brought to the European market must have an ISA system. The policy does not apply to any current vehicles on display — at least not yet. Every new car sold in the EU must have an anti-speeding device by July 2024.
It’s kind of weird that this didn’t happen before.
I’ve asked a number of drivers if they would prefer to (a) abolish speed limits, or (b) abolish speeding using technology, or (c) maintain the status quo where speeding is prohibited but often easy to get away with and subject to biased human enforcers… and nearly everyone prefers (c). 🤷
In places with electronic toll collection, speeding could’ve been almost completely eliminated decades ago. Today the same is true for anywhere with ANPR (which is getting pretty ubiquitous).
and for good reason.
in a democracy the EU would not be able to do this.
