Action “Wisła”

In south-east Poland lived still, despite earlier deportations to the ZSSR, over 150 k Ukrainians. The communist Polish government aimed to completely eliminate the problem of the Ukrainian minority, thus planed an action of forcibly relocating it to the Reclaimed Lands [Western Poland, land granted to Poland after the II World War]. As a propaganda argument for this operation, referred to with the cryptonim “Wisła”, [the Polish government] used the death of a Polish viceminister of defence, gen. Karol Świerczewski, who died in an ambush organized by the Ukrainian Insurgency Army (UPA) in March 1947.

From April to July of 1947, as part of the operation, [the Polish government] forcibly relocated over 140 k people. Its main goal was the poloninsation of the Ukrainian minority and removal of UPAs support network [?]. The forcibly relocated were directed to Pomerania, Lower Silesia, Warmia and Masuria, whereby [the Polish government] aimed to scatter them [the Ukrainians] as much as possible, such that they don’t make up more than 10% of the population of a given settlement. During action “Wisła” around 500 Ukrainians died, while over 3 k, mainly representatives of the Intelligentsia and Clergy, were directed to the Central Work Camp in Jaworzno.

Like I wonder why a population which members formed a paramilitary group which has links to the, now defeated, Nazis and members of which helped slaughter Poles during the war. Also wouldn’t be surprised if more relevant context which I am not aware of was left out.
