He is very much trying to learn it, has been for years.
After posting I finally found some clips of them speaking the language. Seems like they’re still at a pretty basic level… Normally I would make a harsh comment about white sexpats not actually caring enough to learn but because EJ is such a sweetheart and sympathetic to Uncle Ho and Luna, I think this can be overlooked
