GenZedong•What the hell is up with China backing Pol Pot? (and other questions surrounding the Khmer rouge)
17·3 years agoChina tended to have really bad foreign policy following the split. They started viewing the USSR and by extension Vietnam as really large threats, and this was reflected in their Cambodia stance. They didn’t want another pro-soviet country in their vicinity.
As for Cambodia itself, North Vietnamese troops actually trained Khmer Rouge soldiers before they took power, so perhaps even they thought at first that they were comitted to the socialist path. Nevertheless, Vietnam liberated them later on.
I just want to mention that the nordic countries who usually top those «happiest countries»-lists are only there as the lists themselves use living standard as a metric. As someone from a nordic country I can assure you all that the population is not happy, we’ve lost all our dignity and have among the highest rates of anti-depressant use in the world, with high suicide rates as well.

Sorry To Bother You is a fun one, other than that I would recommend some Soviet made films. Stalker and Stellaris by Tarkovsky are great, even if he did leave the Soviet Union later on his works still carry a non-western approach. Come and See is also really good but extremely depressing. Best war movie there is.
