I get the feeling Chris Hedges won’t fill the same role as Chomsky. Now between politicians like AOC, writers like Angela Davis, and thousands of internet personalities pandering to whatever eclectic blend of ideologies get them enough Patreon followers to quit their day job, there is no shortage of prominent figures that will try to lead the working class astray. I think the closest thing would be someone like Angela Davis, who younger people actually know and look up to.
Quick answer: no
Longer answer: For the most part, no. A communist organization (which ought to be a communist party, even under conditions of illegality) should not be dependent on the bourgeoisie for funds, even if in rare cases they may receive donations from a bourgeois traitor to their class. However, regular donations from the bourgeoisie cannot be a long-term strategy and the basis for fundraising.
Didn’t Marx, Engels, and Lenin struggle against left and right opportunistic trends? What do you take issue with? Is it ideological struggle in general or the view that Maoism, Trotskyism, the New Left, etc. are characterized as revisionist deviations?
