    Not to say that sanctions have zero effect, but when your country is large enough and people have compelling reasons to trade with you, and also you are capable of having at least some manufacturing capacity, you can mitigate them.

      Honestly, I’d argue that sanctions have had a positive effect on Russia because they finally forced domestic industry to start being developed. Russia is now producing stuff like domestic planes like MC-21 which would’ve never happened if it could just keep importing western jets. The whole rust belt in Russia is now revitalizing largely due to sanctions.
