Ouagadougou, October 15, 2025 (AIB) – Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, representing the Head of State, declared on Wednesday, during the commemoration of the 38th anniversary of the assassination of Captain Thomas Sankara, that the Burkinabe nation paid tribute to “a national and universal hero,” whose vision continues to inspire young people.

“Thomas Sankara is not only a national hero, he is a universal symbol. He spoke to his people, but also to all oppressed peoples. He dreamed of a world free from domination, corruption, and renunciation. He showed that dignity cannot be begged for, it must be earned,” declared the Prime Minister, reading the address by the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

According to him, the Burkinabe nation is following in the footsteps of a man of value and dignity, whose work it has a duty to continue.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the Thomas Sankara Memorial, located on the former site of the Council of the Entente in Ouagadougou, where the father of the Revolution and his twelve companions were cowardly assassinated on October 15, 1987.

He emphasized that, 38 years after his tragic death, Thomas Sankara’s vision continues to resonate as a call for justice, sovereignty, and dignity. Burkina Faso, Africa, and the world remember with pride and gratitude this man whose name remains a powerful symbol.

Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo recalled that Captain Sankara, through his uprightness, humility, discipline and courage, offered African youth a true moral compass, while demonstrating that another model of governance, based on responsibility, work and love of the fatherland, was possible.

“Even today, his message resonates in our schools, in our villages, within our defense and security forces. ‘Homeland or death, we will win’ is not just a motto, it is a true battle cry and the expression of our determination to fight for the total liberation of our beloved Faso,” he said.

The Prime Minister announced that the torch of the Revolution will remain permanently lit at the Memorial, offering every young person a source of inspiration to build the world of their dreams.

He also stated that in order to keep alive the memory of the sacrifice of Thomas Sankara and his companions, the government will institute a military ceremony every first Thursday of the month, starting at 4 p.m.

The President of the International Committee of the Thomas Sankara Memorial (CIMTS), retired Colonel-Major Daouda Traoré, stressed that this day of commemoration represents a powerful moment of reaffirmation of attachment to the inalienable values ​​for which these revolutionaries gave their lives.

According to him, the Thomas Sankara Memorial is now a universal space, a center for education, reflection and transmission of the values ​​of the Revolution.

Colonel-Major Traoré expressed his gratitude to the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, for the esteem and consideration he has for the visionary and patriot Thomas Sankara.

As a reminder, on October 15, 1987, Captain Thomas Sankara and his twelve companions were assassinated during a coup d’état.
