Even most “allies” view their support more as humoring or an act of common decency than any actual endorsement of trans identities. Many folks don’t actually view you as your gender. They just either respect you enough to call you the right pronouns, or they just consider it common decency.

But when a trans person does something horrible, something truly unforgivable? Suddenly that person isn’t worthy of respect anymore, so there’s no point in humoring their identity. If you actually believe trans identities are “valid,” then you won’t misgender someone, even if they’re a childremoved serial killer. Cisgender women don’t get called men and thrown in men’s prisons if they commit acts of brutal violence. Their gender isn’t invalidated, because their identity is not conditional. Most “allies” view respect for trans identities as conditional. For some, this means that true monsters are worthy of misgendering. For others, it means any time a trans person says something mean to them they’re worthy of misgendering.

Some people seem to adhere to the idea of “they committed a horrendous act and also died, therefore they can be exempt from our modern etiquette”.

A mindset I see all the time by both sides of the spectrum. I even saw the “it” card thrown around for mere fraud once.

Cis white person commits heinous crime: “This is so sad, they were probably plagued by mental health issues that they never got treated for.”

Minority commits heinous crime: “THIS IS PROOF THAT ALL OF X GROUP ARE BAD. THESE PEOPLE ARE ANIMALS AND SAVAGES. I AM ADOLF HITLER, COMMANDER OF THE THIRD REICH. LITTLE KNOWN FACT ALSO DOPE ON THE MIC.”

I think comrade is comparing the treatment of this shooter to a typical cis white male mass shooter. Since cis white male is the “default” it’s never brought up as an influence on their behavior and it’s not portrayed as representative of cis white males as a whole. If the person is part of a known minority group, however, their identity is used as a reason for what they did and suspicion is cast on the minority group as a whole, despite others in that group having nothing to do with whatever terrible act is being discussed. Hopefully that makes sense.

When I hear that an attack is a lone wolf attack - I just quietly think to myself “yes, this is an open expression of white supremacy in this country, and this person is using such term for terrorism to downplay a pattern of terrorism without knowing the full implications of it”.

Does it apply to non-whites, ofc, it does… is the original meaning still there, yes, it is to me.

Jacob Frey, the mayor of Minneapolis, condemned online attacks on trans people after it emerged that the shooter, born male, identified as female.

“Anybody who is using this as an opportunity to villainize our trans community or any other community out there has lost their sense of common humanity,” he said. “We should not be operating out of a place of hate for anyone. We should be operating out of a place of love for our kids.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. 6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don’t post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
