They NEED Trump to be a unique aberration. Their entire worldview hinges on the status quo being comfortable enough for them to go back to brunch. If Trump isn’t a uniquely horrible monster, but is in fact, business as usual, they might never be able to go back to brunch ever again. Obviously this means they just need to insist hard enough and reality will spontaneously rearrange to match their preferences.
