Slovakia’s Russia-friendly government accused its predecessor of treason and abuse of public office over military aid sent to Ukraine.
The Defense Ministry filed a criminal complaint against the previous government, specifically against former Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad, saying that the caretaker cabinet didn’t have the right to make such a fundamental decision, which left Slovakia without any air defense after it sent all its 13 MiG-29 jets to Ukraine.
Prime Minister Robert Fico has pledged to halt military aid to Kyiv after returning to power last year. The previous administration led by Eduard Heger, a staunch ally of Kyiv’s resistance to Russian aggression, had failed to win a confidence vote in parliament and was in caretaker mode even before it decided to send the warplanes to Ukraine.
“I personally believe that Jaroslav Nad is a traitor and he should not get away with it,” Deputy Defense Minister Igor Melicher told reporters in Bratislava on Friday.

Nad has defended the decision to provide MiGs to Ukraine as “legally sound” as it was based on a a legal analysis and collective government approval. His allies say the criminal complaint is a part of a hybrid war originating from Russia.
