Israelis gloating about the genocide on social media are probably doing almost as much damage to Israel’s international reputation as the genocide.

It’s like trying to run the “Ordinary Germans didn’t know about the Holocaust” myth while a bunch of ordinary Germans are standing next to you going “I LOVE KILLING JEWS.”

Yes, number one is because America is actually a censor state and they just don’t want to tell you.

Number two is because they’re really pissed off that China is making money off of it. They’d rather an American oligarch make money off of it.

And number three, actually that’s it. That’s basically it. TikTok does everything that every other social media does, only better. Are they an addictive platform? Yep, and so is Facebook and Twitter, and yadda yadda yadda. Do they steal data? Yep. And so does Facebook and Twitter and yada yada yada. Do they send it to the government? Yep. And so does Facebook and Twitter and yada yada yada.

We already passed a resolution that TikTok has to keep all of its data on Americans in Texas. So you’re basically guaranteed that China can’t actually see it. And even if they can, who the fuck cares? Your own government is spying on you anyway. Everyone is spying on you, your microphone is tapped. Use Graphene OS on a Pixel and use tor if you want real privacy. Without that you basically have none.

Thank you for coming to my Anti-capitalism TED Talk.

The legitimate of those reasons apply equally, if not more so, to US based social media.

Give one good reason that doesn’t hinge on racism or conspiracies about Chinese surveillance. And make sure it is a reason to ban TikTok specifically, and can’t be applied to all social media. There’s no reason to single out tiktok beyond racism and anti-chinese fearmongering.

American tech oligarchs wants to buy TikTok at fire sale prices. That’s as good an explanation as you could ever get for “banning” TikTok.

That’s the only reason this is happening. “Free market for me, not for thee” for American corporations.

imo tiktok shouldn’t be banned but tbf short form content is brain-melting, and I’m speaking from experience. my attention span is still recovering from when i used tiktok/yt shorts.

I try not to use it after I had a night where I just lay in bed watching shorts instead of sleeping, it’s really easy to just lose all your time to it. I’m not sure if my attention span is damaged from this stuff or something else, but I struggle massively with focusing on my work in the last 6 months or so in a way I never did before.

You’re right, there’s a very good reason to ban all social media just because of surveillance, Chinese or American. And to shut up those influencers who are nothing more than glorified advertisers that people follow for some reason.

Why is surveillance something to be worried about? And is all surveillance created equal? These aren’t “gotchas” or whatever, these are honest questions about your thought process here. Why is surveillance bad? What things can it be used to do? And surely another country’s surveillance is overall less impactful (and less of a threat) than your own. (I’m far more worried about my own government spying on me than I am with a foreign country like China, simply because they have less ability to actually do anything to me, being an ocean away).

Yes, I agree, but why is being spied on bad? What is the problem with it? I have my own reasons for disliking it, but I don’t know what you personally dislike about it. What is your response to the bullshit “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about?”

What more of a reason do you need to have. It’s a human right, I don’t want to be treated like a criminal and have my data harvested for profit. I don’t leave my door and windows open for anyone to look at me, and I also don’t want anyone spying at me online. Especially some giant, lying, thieving, greedy, no good corporations.

What is your response to the bullshit “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about?”

If someone spew that idiotic nonsense at me I would demand they let me in their house so I can look what they’re doing during the day since they’re the paragon of security.

Good answer lol. If you’re interested, we could talk further about human rights in general, and which ones are the most important (Security obviously being right up there with food and shelter).

      Really?

Which good reason is there that would not be way better be dealt with with generalized legislation, like privacy regulations?
