Publicly engaging with trolls will just encourage them to troll more. Ban them and they will lose interest pretty soon.

Man I just spent too much time reading about this, going down the rabbit hole, and I’m just glad that I’m part of a community (Lemmy) that is so clear about how we’re supposed to treat each other. We not only care about each others’ experience, but we’re able to avoid reproducing tropes that reinforce awful ways of understanding and treating each other.

Others can claim that the ex-maintainer of the fork at hand fanned the flames, but the flames would have never been there to begin with in a more humane context.

The maintainer created a poll to rename the project. 4Chan came up with Sneedacity. Apparently it’s a Simpson’s reference. It’s a silly name. The maintainer didn’t like it, and started saying things about 4Chan that others (see thread mentioned below) have characterized as exaggerated. 4Chan responded with threads full of mockery and bullying. The threads are available in the post where the ex-maintainer explains why they’re stepping down.

In summary, the 4Chan people who care care because they had an opportunity to do something silly and because they saw an opportunity to bully the maintainer.

Some trolling started even before by provockig as far I remember telling why was this person deciding this just in the middle of the proposals before taking action.

Hmm. Sorry, I’m having a bit of difficulty understanding what you’re saying. Do you mean that there were larger community efforts to first decide upon what to do and then act, but this maintainer ignored the community?

No, there were people just claiming that the maintainer has no right to choose these things about the project, in the middle of everything. I remember at least just a person.

Then, after the provocation and some trolling later the maintainer started moderating and replying to the provocation.

I don’t know why they just came and started provocating the situation and trolling.

So, basically we’re not going to have an Audacity fork because of some 4channers.

Really makes me wonder whether you can buy professional 4chan trolls. People that come up with an “in-joke”, push it on 4chan and then wait for everyone else to do the crimes.

I mean, I hope so, but it wouldn’t surprise me, if they harass other forks’ maintainers, too, until their meme fork is the only one left. And at that point, they’ll abandon their meme fork, because that’s when the joke becomes boring.

The title sounds like they want to put that person as alarmist.

I saw directly certain trolling and uncivil behaviour in the discussions related to certain users from SneedCity.

Imagine a discussion to choose a new name before the organization is set, etc and a certain amount of users start saying “who are you to say this” (provocking). Then, they start paraphrasing and checking to the minimum error to any reply to start a sub-discussion even not allowing the things flow normally.

Some even claim that the project is bullshit and that other people already published SneedCity in AUR.

I try to check this and see just 1 commit from the last 30 minutes as the main commit after this fork, as if this was just organized fast, upload to AUR and have a reason to discuss.

To be exact, this seems likely my past experience in WhatsApp and Telegram in serious channels about programming, free software and GNU/Linux.

Every time something comes mainstream or near to mainstream (Telegram was very trendy for tech discussions back in 2016-2018 in Spain and Latin-America), this kind of people start to appear.

Edited: Seems someone was spreading misinformation.

Even being a serious situation I could not avoid writing like that in the previous version of the comment.

To be exact, even if the only shared thing are the kind of profile pictures we use recycled from David Revoy, there is like a culture in the way to act between us, and most use to be kind towards other people.

However, this user was acting in other way promoting missinformation was agaisnt that idea, even when it is not stablised but which is an unethical act.
