Reminds me of how I set up my laptop to show an MOTD that’s a “Quotation from Chairman Mao of the Day” at TTY login using
fortune. I only ever had a small selection of the quotes though, because the only other Quotations from Chairman Maofortunefile I was able to find online had weird formatting, and I wanted it to be formatted like the entries in the stockfortunefile that are quotes, so the ones I have in there were copied by hand from my paper Little Red Book 😆Wait, you did that too? 😮
I couldn’t bother to do it by hand, though, I just downloaded the HTML of “Quotations from Chairman Mao” from the Marxists Archive and wrote a little script to process it…
I probably should figure out how to do that at some point. while doing it I was definitely feeling the “this could be automated but I’m not 100% sure how I’d do it” with how standardized the format I was putting them into was lol. honestly I’m way too inclined to do shit like that when I should really just sit and think about how to do the automation. I remember when I was younger, during the 30th, which is to say, XXX, Olympics, I made a Twitter account and went around searching for people making the obvious joke there and retweeting them. plenty of people seemed to think it was a bot (reasonable assumption) but it was literally just a bored kid doing it all by hand 😆
