Gender systems aren’t solely the result of religion. A great many human societies have had gender roles, and they varied greatly, with different things expected of women and men and different extra categories, often with religious importance. However, it’s important to remember that the patriarchy and suppression of non-cis/binary gender roles are greatly tied to the rise of private property and warfare. (Religion is obviously a mechanism of enforcement of social rules in favor of the economic and social order, of course).
