For the West, the Jeffrey Epstein files provide a damning portrait of institutional failure and active collusion across the entire political, economic, cultural, and academic elite in the late pedophile sex trafficker’s crimes. For some nations under neocolonial domination, they open a window into their own comprador rulers’ depraved complicity with that system.

But for the masses of the Global South, what the Epstein revelations offer is vindication and schadenfreude. Long used to self-righteous Western lectures about human rights, corruption, and the rule of law, the global majority now has irrefutable evidence of the rot at the heart of the empire.

In particular, for a country of its size and influence, the files emphatically demonstrate Epstein’s singular failure to imbricate China’s elite in his schemes. The few he did manage to contact were by and large embittered, anti-communist ‘dissident’ businessmen. In other words, cut from the same cloth as Jimmy Lai: the Trumpian, far-right tabloid publisher recently sentenced to 20 years in prison for colluding with Western governments to incite violent separatist riots in Hong Kong.

Coming hot on the heels of that verdict, and the howls of outrage from Lai’s imperialist sponsors – foremost among them Hong Kong’s former British colonisers – Wang Guan of China Global Television Network (CGTN) pulled no punches in his scathing breakdown of the Epstein saga. For him, the revelations amount to a ‘CT scan of the whole system’: a system in irredeemable moral decay, whose standing to judge the rest of the world lies in ruins.
