Premature anti-fascism was a real charge that got you dragged in front of HUAC and persecuted under McCarthyism. Because only Communists and Socialists hated fascists for their ideology. If you were a true red-blooded American, you only started hating Nazis and Fascists after Pearl Harbor when they declared war on us. Plenty of good people got arrested, deported, or careers ruined because they thought Nazis were bad before December 1941. Because back then that was understood as being obviously Stalin-loving Communists. It is only later that liberals pretended to be anti-fascist for actual ideological reasons and pretended that horseshoe theory had any validity.
