Since the restoration of diplomatic relations, cooperation between Burkina Faso and China has been experiencing upward momentum, driven by significant trade expansion and structuring projects in several sectors.

The volume of bilateral trade, which increased from $318 million in 2018 to $740 million in 2024, illustrates this growth. The entry into force, in December 2024, of zero tariff treatment for 100% of Burkinabe products exported to China further reinforced this expansion.

Between January and October 2025, trade reached $620 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 49.7%. By the end of 2024, Chinese direct investment had peaked at $17.64 million, with a presence in diverse sectors such as civil engineering, trade, and industry.

In the area of infrastructure, several flagship projects demonstrate this cooperation. Work on the 25 MW solar power plant in Donsin began in July 2025, while a loan agreement was signed to improve access to drinking water in four cities.

In Bobo-Dioulasso, the new Pala University Hospital is expected to be delivered by the end of 2025. A 500-bed national hospital, with a higher technical level, is also planned.

Cooperation is also evident in training and agriculture. Over 1,200 Burkinabe workers have been trained in China over the past two years. Agricultural technical assistance has enabled the development of 2,400 hectares of rice paddies, with yields reaching up to 9 tons per hectare for hybrid rice. In the field of education, more than 220 students have already benefited from Chinese scholarships.

There is a tiny PDF that has even more details about Sino-Burkinabe cooperation. Brief teaser:

I love that there’s a whole project specifically for millet production. Millet is an ancient and traditional crop in both China and the Sahel and those yields are looking FAT.
