Norwegian journalist Yama Wolasmal conducted a series of interviews with Israeli settlers celebrating near the Gaza border, exposing controversial views amid “Israel’s” ongoing military campaign. When asked whether children in Gaza were innocent, one settler replied, “I can see how children are terrorists as well.”

During the picnic-like gathering just kilometers from the war zone, another settler called for the complete displacement of Gaza’s 2.2 million residents and dismissed concerns about ethnic cleansing, citing World War II as a precedent for achieving peace. When pressed on the legality of such actions, the settler rejected international law and denied well-documented reports of settler violence in the occupied West Bank.

As early on in the Occupation as 5 June 1936, by which time many Ethiopian soldiers, lacking radio and telegraph, would not even have been aware that Addis Ababa had been taken, Mussolini was instructing Graziani, ‘All rebels taken prisoner must be shot.’⁴⁹

The Viceroy’s liberal interpretation of what constituted a rebel meant that he gave himself carte blanche to kill almost any Ethiopians he desired—whether military or civilian—for the flimsiest of reasons.
