wtf is the different shades of red supposed to mean on this stupid map?

At first I thought it was conventional wars, but we literally invaded and occupied Haiti and the Dominican Republic and Panama and they are pink.

And why are Belgium, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria dark red?

The more I look at it the less I understand.
