In my opinion, I don’t care where the symbol came from. Especially as someone whose grandparents lived under Japanese occupation, seeing this flag never sits well with me, and I think this flag should be treated the same as the swastika.
While true, it is under that banner which mostrous atrocities were perpetuated, thus linking it to those even though the depicted motive origninally was not related to fascism and its mistdeeds.
To be absolutely fair, most atrocities were commited by the IJA, the army, which used the flag with the centered sun, instead of a sun offset to the side, which is the naval flag.
IJN did commit atrocities, but not as much since they didnt have access to as many POW
