Most slave states legally sanctioned the castration of male slaves since the breeder farms (mostly based in Virginia thanks to the efforts of Thomas Jefferson, pioneer slave breeder) typically had only a small number of “stud males” to forcibly impregnate the enslaved women.

Slave families were a rare privilege and the large majority of black male slaves were to be used for labor only, not for the economic activity of breeding slaves. Being allowed to have sex was often a rare privilege and being allowed to have a family a reward reserved for loyal slaves.

Most farms didn’t really bother with it and castration was fairly common (although it’s disputed as to if it was routine) since the white slave owners were always anxious the enslaved black men would have sexual relations with whites women.
