If you have a dissociative disorder, you may notice that the feeling of clearing your mind for meditation purposes is very similar to dissociation. Putting yourself in this kind of trance is good for spiritual development, but keep in mind mental health may be affected by the practice of meditation. You may be enabling yourself to dissociate from the world or it can give you anxiety attacks. Some may say that the reason is that the feelings you have been holding down come up to the surface, but in reality it is your decision on which side you will believe.

Even if this was true, there are many ways to practice spirituality besides meditation. You can do a possession, dance, or spend time in festivals dedicated to the gods. There are many possibilities and some may not even involve the kami. Living your ancestral ways is another option for those who seek spiritualism without gods involved.

There is the traditional Daoist version of meditation where you attempt to clear your mind of any thoughts (Difficult, and if you have dissociative disorder can seem like dissociation) then there is what is called mindfulness meditation, where you think positive affirmations about your self and future. Brains tend to get active when meditating because the brain does not know what to do with itself when we are calming it down to a certain point. This is normal and it tends to pass with practice meditating.
